We recognise, value and support the important part our 2000+ volunteers play in the life and work of our hospitals and - increasingly - in our communities.
They are no ordinary people: they are very special indivduals of all ages and backgrounds who come from all walks of life, with boundless energy and enthusiasm, to give support and offer help to others.
Volunteers have played an integral part in the Health Service since its inception in 1948. Volunteers bring tremendous value to the NHS in a variety of roles that enhances services to patients and their families. Some of those roles (such as providing library trolleys or fundraising) pre-date the NHS. Other roles reflect newer developments such as involvement in Literacy, hospital surveys and self help groups.
What all these activities have in common is that individuals give freely of their time to benefit the NHS.
People volunteer for an endless variety of reasons. Some want to gain experience, acquire new skills, meet new people or expand their knowledge of the NHS as a way to a new job or career. Others just want to give back to their community, or to help or promote a worthwhile cause or activity. Volunteering makes the person feel good and it gives what one volunteer described as a “private smile”. Each volunteer brings something special and unique and, collectively, our volunteers build a highly important team.
